“word to the wise” wednesday: beth webb

No room is complete without art; it’s like jewelry for a little black dress.

Beth Webb (Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, February 2013)

I love Beth Webb’s work … and I love art!  Art is one of the best ways to add sophistication to a home with small children.  Paintings are often out of reach and protected behind glass, which means you don’t have to worry about them being broken or damaged.

I also find artwork to be a fantastic way to commemorate an occasion or remember a trip.  Perhaps as a result of this theory, I’m starting to run out of “prime” wall space in my own home.  At some point, I’ll start rotating my art or begin collecting non-glass sculpture.   My twin boys may be “old enough to know better,” but a Chihuly is still not a good idea!  Oh, and I’d have to spend their college fund.  Technicalities, really.  Note the art they’ve created on the inside of their laser printer box clubhouse.

Do you have a favorite piece of art?

I found a Lee Reynolds canvas with birds and flowers at auction. A lady had bought it as part of a lot and didn't like it, so she sold it to me for practically nothing. It is so pretty (and his stuff does well on 1st dibs). And he hasn't even died yet! Haha

Buying our first originals this past summer was the best move we ever made (I ever made since hubby has very little opinions just lets me make the purchase). They have brought so much to our home and I look at both pieces each day with such warmth and comfort in my heart. I know that sounds so cheesy but I really am so happy with them. We bought a plein air piece done of the Manayunk Bridge that is in our living room. When my husband and I were dating, we spent a lot of time in Manayunk because he lived there so that painting will always have special meaning. And then I totally surprised myself by purchasing an abstract mixed media piece from an artist out of Atlanta. I was just really drawn to her work and fascinated how each piece was so different and unique. That one is above our bed and I can't wait to see where both of these pieces go in our next home - whenever that may be. And you're right - they are completely out of the hands of kiddos which is awesome!

You're so on target, Traci! Art has such a dramatic affect on a room and it's something you can collect over time. I'm a huge fan of original art over reproductions - they're available at ALL price levels. Great post!
