“word to the wise” wednesday: sallie giordano

[W]e don’t take our house’s history too seriously.  What this place is really all about is creating sweet memories for our children.

Sallie Giordano (Traditional Home, October 2012)

Sallie wasn’t talking about Christmas … but isn’t making memories for our children the most important reason we decorate for the holidays?

Remember it’s the last day to enter the incredible Design Camp giveaway, thanks to Kelli and Lori.  Simply leave a comment on this or any other post from November 27, 2012 through today.  I’ll announce the winner tomorrow!

Sallie’s gorgeous home — in which George Washington slept — is featured in the October 2012 issue of Traditional Home.  View it online here.

I love the symmetry of the room along with the ample natural light. I agree that regardless of a home's history the overall goal should be to really LIVE in the space in the manner that best suits your aesthetic and your family. Otherwise it's just a showroom.

Mmmmm, isn't that the truth. When all things fall apart for my kids (as they grow), I hope they always get a feeling of peace and love when they think of their home.

The history of a house is only written by the lives that have grown up (in age or otherwise) within its walls. Many beautiful homes lack that soul that others just exude. When I moved into my very outdated little home at 24, I jumped into painting and renovating; trying to make it "mine", until I saw the pencil-marked heights of the children who grew up there many years before I was even born. That bit of the kitchen doorway will never be repainted :) Thanks for reminding me of that moment today!

Isn't that the truth! Some times we forget it is all about the little people and memories we make for them and the rest of us in that special world away from the world, our homes. Do you have your bags packed for design camp? I DO! ;)
