“word to the wise” wednesday: arie l. kopelman

Rooms can have a clean, fresh, modern sensibility but still have traditional elements that let your mind wander through history.  Where you live doesn’t have to look like Grandma’s house.

— Arie L. Kopelman, former president of Chanel Inc. (Architectural Digest, July 2012)

You should visit Architectural Digest online to see photos of Arie Kopelman’s Nantucket house.  There is so much tradition — you can’t deny the colonial influence — in this space, but it definitely feels very clean and has a modern sensibility about it.   I love the phrase “let your mind wander through history.”

What’s your take?

Definitely clean fresh look! It does have a sense of history yet it is modern!

I so agree with you, based on tradition but with a modern day sensibility. Exactly how I like to design. Lovely space...does it say relax, read a book, and escape a fastvpaceclifestyle?

Love the look and think it's always nice to add a touch of history through antiques in any space. They just add character, but as this room shows certainly don't make it feel old!

Love! The way country should be done....no heavy florals, ruffles, or whacky colors. It just makes you go "sigh".......

This may be one of my favorite quotes - I love the wandering through history portion as well and think there should be pieces of history in a room. They are the conversation pieces - the items that bring a story to life and that shape a home. Mix in current fabrics, clean paint color, and it's a wonderful mix.

I love the room and totally agree with the advice. So true. I think even the most contemporary spaces have room for some history.
