can colors be bold yet calm?

I’m at the point with my fabric line where I’m brainstorming names for patterns and colorways.

As I puttered around the Internet, I stumbled across a stunning home designed in shades of purple, turquoise and chartreuse.  Sounds crazy-bold, right?  But when the shades are tempered and layered across a base of white, I find the result to be calm and serene … not to mention incredibly gorgeous.  You must, must, must click through the House Beautiful slideshow of this New York Home, designed by Pat Healing of HB Home.  Her interview is super insightful as well!

If you — hypothetically speaking, of course — were introducing a pattern using this palette, what would you name the colorway?

Now you’ve got me thinking! I’ll let you know if anything comes up, but here’s something interesting: Did you know that purple doesn’t really exist in a hard color form? It’s only what we think we see, but it’s still just red and blue. Kind of like white. It’s just a perception….the purple at the end of a rainbow is a figment of our imagination.

I wonder if this palette is calm because the majority of the colors are perceived (purple tempered with white) instead of colors identifiable on the visible spectrum? Whoa! We’ll need a person with a color doctorate degree to answer that question!

I’m with Tawna…you’ve got me thinking! Mmmm…this palette specifically makes me think of spring and all of the flowers coming into bloom. I’d probably use something like showers or renew or something like that.

The possiblities are endless when it comes to colors and patterns. It’s amazing how gorgeous a room can become when using colors out of the box!

That whole house is simply stunning. I’d think about what kind of energy the fabrics portray and what graphic quality. Do they meander, sprint, whirl, flash, jump, zap, explode?

We are all dying to see your fabrics!! This is so exciting.

Hmmm, read her article and found it slightly off putting. Too many “shoulds and shouldn’ts. Doesn’t take away from the amazing space!

while way too predictable, “springtime” is the first thing I thought of when I saw that room. Maybe it is time we had a fabric, lipstick or paint color that is identifiable…I’m just sayin’. Cant wait to see your fabric line!

Love this photo. My daughte’rs room is in these exact colors. I really like the way they play off of each other.

So excited for your fabric line!!! Loving this color combo. xo

  9. Traci- Purple, chartreuse and eggplant. Colorway: Healing’s Plum. I’m thinking a personal connotation before one of the dominant colors. Feel absolutely free to ignore that I wrote this suggestion!

Can’t wait to see your fabric line come to life!
